POP Trail - Stop 3

native prairie_edited.jpg

The roots are the key to healthy, productive native prairies.

Without strong, deep roots, a plant cannot:

1) Absorb water and nutrients (vitamins and minerals) needed by the leaves to produce food for itself to grow.

2) Produce as much forage (food) for grazing animals nor as much cover (shelter) for wildlife.

3) Hold the soil in place, and keep the water from running across the rangeland and eroding the soil away. When this happens, the water quality in our creeks, rivers, and lakes is lessened.
