POP Trail - Stop 6

Prairie fire on native grass .jpg

Fire is extremely important in maintaining the health and diversity of the prairie while keeping the woody plants from establishing themselves. The buds of prairie grasses and forbs are at or below the ground, allowing them to survive fire. The intense heat kills trees and shrubs with exposed stems and branches, opening the ground to full sunlight again.
